Chapter Six

Step Four—

Embracing Fear

with Love

Over the years, while being a student of life on my own path and a professional forgiveness counselor to many, I’ve discovered that what our spiritual awakening looks like on the outside doesn’t really matter: our shifts of consciousness may be flamboyant or extremely subtle, and most likely they will fall somewhere in between. Except in a few rare cases, awakening happens within us in thousands of tiny baby steps. Some are obvious and life-changing, but many are often mysterious and not even available to our conscious mind. As we grow in our process, the shifts become more and more conscious, but even then there are vast levels of our being that, for most of us, are hidden throughout our entire human lifetime.

The softness I’ve grown into during the past twenty-five years is due to the influence of my love for the Divine Mother. This aspect of the One provides us with gentle strength, being impervious to the egoic mind. She has no need to prove and no dramatic, sassy performance. Her love is universal and tender; it gently supports us, sometimes so subtly that if we aren’t in touch with wonder and awe at the little miracles of our day, we miss it entirely. But that’s okay, because this blessing is always here, waiting for us to remember it again and again, becoming brighter with each knot of pain we release from our hearts and minds.

I mention this soft power here because, as you go to the edges of whatever constriction you’ve discovered, you may be amazed by your response to it. You may have a big burst of emotion and revelation, or you may just breathe out and feel lighter. What it looks or feels like doesn’t matter. Over time, you will experience a myriad of variations on the theme. What matters is the direction of healing you choose, and the sincere prayer you use to guide you.

Just as many Muslims face Mecca five times each day, we face our original innocence again and again. With sincerity, we disrobe before our Creator. Which veils drop to the ground, and whether they are of heavy burlap or fine silk, is unimportant. Just stay focused on the unveiling. For after all, at this stage in our evolution, we’re an entire planetary species of striptease artists. Take it all off, then take it off again!

Approaching the Edges

of the Knot

Once you’ve found the tightness in your body and described it to yourself with honesty, openness, and willingness, you have three options:

1. You can choose to retreat from the pain.

2. You can decide to battle the pain.

3. You can lean gently toward the pain.

Let’s explore each of these options.

Option 1: Retreating from the Pain

This method is humanity’s most familiar mode of operation. We’ve all done it a million times, over countless lifetimes.

If you retreat from
